Preparing for Failure (podcast)

I talk with Rob Alvarez, of the Professor Game Podcast, about games in the context of learning, exploration, and failure.

Rob is an engineer, businessman, and educator involved in the field of gamification. His question is clear: how do games teach? My answer is vague: I’m more interested in the problem than the answer. I’ve always been more interested in designing the game than playing it.

Gaming is a way of phrasing problems. In a game situation, there is a start, an end, goals, and strategies for reaching them. We think problems are real because that makes answers possible. But in most cases, it’s not. Our problems arise from how we think, and our answers are destructive.

Rob advocates games for learning. I advocate games for failing, to show us how we sabotage ourselves. The best games motivate us to create something new.
