Lost in the Grove, Episode #235: Making Art (podcast)

An artistic conversation about art, and an interview with therapist Lincoln Stoller.

I'm coming back to the idea of discernment and discretion in creating art. I don't want to get away from the idea of this thing of self-censorship and creativity. I mean, there's got to be an element of courage here. You've got to be willing.

I keep thinking about Keith Jarrett who could just disappear and still produce music at the same time, for hours on end. He had something in his brain that was unusual.

It would be like riding a bicycle while you're thinking about everything going on. It has to be in your body. You have to give yourself the opportunity to express yourself.

And get back to courage. Don't expect to succeed. Most good ideas don't come out right the first time. You're lucky if they ever come out right. But the people who make them come out right are both courageous and diligent and, well, they're skilled. A lot of things. It doesn't happen immediately.

I’ve significantly cleaned up the audio of this 90-minute conversation. The original video and audio tracks are available on Dave’s sites, listed below.

Describing our conversation, Dave says:

In this deeply layered conversation, quantum physicist and clinical counselor Dr. Lincoln Stoller. joins me to explore the terrain between science, and spirit. From neural training, and anxiety to the unseen forces that shape identity. Lincoln opens up about parenting, failure, and the work of becoming who you are. It's a raw, unscripted look into the psychology of creativity, and what it takes to truly grow.
