Are Schools Relevant? (podcast)

The Educational Triage Podcast. Lincoln Stoller joins Tony Hunt and Philip Summers.

The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.
Alvin Toffler

The Education Triage podcast is described as “bringing enlightenment and community to the Alternative Education crowd, and those in the mainstream who have the curiosity and the interest.”

Tony, Philip, and I discuss:

  • What learning is, and schools are.

  • What’s personally meaningful, socially useful, and institutionally enforced.

The basics taught in school are now unnecessary because kids learn them in their unschooled environment. Reading is part of the virtual social environment. Math was always taught badly. Spelling and grammar are only learned by writing, and school never taught writing, it and still doesn’t.

  • Today's priorities are creativity, communication, and insight.

  • Are kids less courageous than before?

  • How does one learn to be creative?

School does not teach these things; they cannot be taught in the school framework. Schools should be limited to teaching trade skills. It's resources that kids need, not teachers. They need enablers.

The old public school model is a zombie. It's dangerous and should be dismantled. We don't need to know what comes next, just make room for it!

The Education Triage Podcast, with Tony Hunt and Philip Summers

Tony Hunt has taught pre-k through university and spent the majority of his time in alternative education (30-years) at the secondary level… His working in Ecuador and later being a Migrant Education consultant also lent itself to bringing skills that worked when helping students and families.

Philip Summers has worked in education, advanced learning states, as well as baseball and endurance sports coaching for over 30 years. Philip believes in radical educational structure reform that incorporates approaches such as the Flow States, intrinsic student motivators, small learning environments, Integral Theoretical approaches, with a de-emphasis on college and an emphasis on lifelong evolution through learning.
