Monsters are the things that drive people to do monstrous things. They aren’t beings in the objective sense, but then, none of what makes up our identity are objective things. Still, they are as real as any part of us. They are constructions that inhabit our thoughts.
We need to picture monsters as other than ourselves in order to suppress and avoid them. We don’t want the responsibility for creating our monsters, as that could threaten our winnings. This is more than just a fallacy of certitude, it’s a tendency toward narcissism. We all whitewash our flaws.
